TECHNICAL SCOPE

Business dashboards and operational data visualisation

A dashboard should support a decision: detect an anomaly, compare periods or track work. Metric definitions, update frequency and data quality are established before charts. The interface distinguishes missing values, stale data and results that are genuinely zero.

Activities and verification

  • Indicators, time series, tables and filters aligned with the intended task.
  • APIs and data sources with loading, error and empty-result states.
  • Responsive visualisations and text alternatives for essential information.

Initial decisions and integration

I agree indicator definitions, sources, frequency and target users. I can work on views or data connections in an existing system alongside source owners. The design distinguishes operational data, estimates and unavailable information.

A verification example

A time-based indicator is checked against known data for filtering, aggregation, units and time zones. Delayed or unavailable sources are also tested. The screen should make freshness understandable and distinguish zero, missing data and errors.

Deliverables and acceptance criteria

Dashboard, metric definitions, data contracts and verification scenarios. Maximum delay, intervals and comparison limits are agreed to prevent misleading readings.

Where to start

Provide the decisions to support, sample data, indicator definitions and expected update frequency.

Does every value need real-time updates?

Frequency follows the decision being supported and source availability. Periodic, on-demand or continuous updates are assessed against system costs and constraints.
