The distribution is chosen around supported hardware, update lifecycle and maintenance. Yocto, Buildroot and OpenWrt address different needs: the goal is a reproducible configuration with known components and a clear device installation and recovery process.
Activities and verification
Integrate the bootloader, kernel, device tree, filesystem and application services.
Configure networking, access control, logging and process supervision.
Verify boot, storage footprint, recovery and updates on the actual device.
Initial decisions and integration
Before changes, I clarify the available BSP, hardware variants, update responsibilities and existing release procedures. I can contribute to an existing image, a service or a specific integration without requiring a replacement distribution or infrastructure.
A verification example
A release can be checked by rebuilding the image from documented inputs, booting the device and checking services, interfaces and recovery from agreed faults. Build reproducibility, boot and update behaviour are separate checks with explicit configurations and results.
Deliverables and acceptance criteria
Build configurations and recipes, agreed images, package inventory and operating instructions. Tests document boot, connectivity, services and recovery from defined failure conditions.
Where to start
Specify the board and SoC, required interfaces, connectivity, available storage and expected product support lifecycle.
Are Yocto or Buildroot mandatory?
They are examples of build systems. The solution follows the platform, existing distribution, support lifecycle and client operating practices.
